It’s tough brewing beer during the winter on Donner Summit. First we need a day that is warm enough so that we can turn on the outside water taps and avoid frozen fingers. Cold also affects all of the brewing times temperatures. But the unexpected dilemma was figuring out what to do with the spent hops and barley, which normally become part of our garden compost. Not only is the compost pile hidden by eight feet of snow, but climbing the snow walls makes getting to the garden a bit much. Never fear, power tools to the rescue!
