Summit Pale Stout (#7)

Lucky #7.  Shooting for a strong, full bodied blond ale, with a flowery hop in the low range of the IPA category.

I spent about an hour chatting with the folks down at Reno Homebrewer and learned a bunch of tricks.  First, the Oatmeal used in batch #6 is likely responsible for the haziness.  Second, instead of pouring the kettle through a filter into the carboy, wait an hour to let it settle and then siphon it!  This leaves a bunch of the trub at the bottom of the boil pot and avoids back injury, or even the need to have a helper.  Third, apparently my sparge water temperature should be higher.  The target of 165-170 is for the grain bed, not the sparge water.  Recommendation was to start with water at ~190, but that feels a bit high to me.

I bought myself a propane burner, which does two main things: (1) it allows me to boil water much faster and (2) it keeps me out of the kitchen.  The reduced boil time cuts down the entire brewing time by about 25%, and being out of the kitchen (I’m brewing in my driveway and garage) keeps Emily happy so I don’t freak out about germs in the kitchen all day.  Being able to eat is a significant advantage!
